  UHF vs VHF. VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) are two radio frequency bands of electromagnetic waves. Both of these bands are widely used in wireless television broadcast services. These bands are divided into small sub-bands called channels. Those channels are used for different purposes in different countries. VHF. On the VHF and UHF bands, you usually find ragchewing in the repeater sections, although wide-open spaces for an SSB, CW, or digital conversation are available in the so-called weak signal segments. Scan the wide-open spaces away from the repeater channels and you may come across a local group using a frequency as their “watering hole.”.

In between these extremes is the “sweet spot” for the radio spectrum for conventional mobile systems, with the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band ranging from MHz to 3 GHz and providing what many consider to be the best compromise between usable band-widths and propagation characteristics required for wide area coverage. The two major wavelengths used in vehicle to vehicle, or vehicle to base communications are VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). The differences between these bands may not seem that important, but when you have an incident that requires emergency communication, the last thing you need to worry about is your radio’s range.
